The City of West Hollywood has partnered with DEFENT to provide residents with free fentanyl detection devices as part of its ongoing harm-reduction and public safety initiatives.
Through the new DEFENT ONE portal, all West Hollywood residents are eligible to receive up to five free fentanyl testing devices per month. The program aims to save lives and reduce overdoses by empowering individuals to test substances for fentanyl and other contaminants before use.
The devices can be ordered online and will be discreetly shipped directly to residents’ homesin plain, unmarked packaging to protect privacy. Participants may opt for a one-time shipment or automatic monthly deliveries. The portal stresses that all information collected is used solely to process orders and will not be shared with law enforcement.
The DEFENT ONE device is an all-in-one, easy-to-use fentanyl detection tool that can identify traces of the potent opioid and other harmful substances commonly found in counterfeit drugs.
Local non-profit and community organizations funded by the City of West Hollywood can also request bulk orders for distribution through harm-reduction programs and outreach efforts.
In addition to home delivery, the city is working with local partners to establish in-person pickup locations for residents who prefer to collect devices locally. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.
The DEFENT program is part of West Hollywood’s larger commitment to harm reduction, which includes free Narcan (naloxone) distribution, public education on overdose prevention, and partnerships with local healthcare providers and LGBTQ+ organizations. These efforts reflect the city’s ongoing leadership in public health, community safety, and compassionate outreach — continuing a legacy that began in the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The city also recently co-sponsored a sober dance at the West Hollywood Recovery Center Log Cabin to support people in recovery.
